How to Support Children Through a Parent or Loved One's Cancer
Carissa Hodgson, LCSW, OSW-C, Director of Programs and Community Outreach at Bright Spot Network
Oct 26, 2023 11am - 12pm
When someone is diagnosed with cancer, it affects their entire family system. When children are involved, adults often worry about how to manage their questions and feelings.
What will they tell them about the cancer diagnosis and treatment?
How will they explain it?
What can they do to help the children process their feelings?
There are many tools parents, grandparents and other adults can use to help children navigate a parent or loved one's cancer, including using intentional language and children's books to introduce the concept of cancer, organizing a small intimate care team and predictable schedule for children, and finding creative ways to maintain physical contact and quality time with children even through cancer treatment.
Join this webinar for more tools and resources that are aimed at helping all children, from infancy through adolescence.

A cancer diagnosis often prompts people to take stock of their lives, what they may leave behind, and how they can continue being part of their family's future, even if not physically present. One practical way to work through some of the emotions that emerge is through legacy projects: that heart work that helps you and your loved ones remember special moments and make wishes for the future.
Join us for an event that begins to explore the concept of legacy work, offers tools and resources to begin your own projects, and provides a safe space with others to begin practicing some of this writing with prompts and templates.

Understanding Hereditary Cancers and Your Family
Parenting with Cancer Webinar Series: Understanding Hereditary Cancers and Your Family
Date: Tuesday, October 3
Time: 10am PST/12CST/1EST
Speaker: Dr. Sue Friedman, FORCE Founder and Executive Director
SIGN UP
Description: If you have hereditary cancer and are a parent, there may be a million questions swimming around in your head. How do I share this information with my kids and when? When should my kids get genetic counseling? Do other members of my family need to know? Join us to dig deep into all things hereditary cancer, kids, and parenting. This webinar will discuss cancers identified as having a hereditary component, genetic counseling and testing, national guidelines for testing, when it’s appropriate to test children, how to share genetic information with family members and why that is important... and more! While this presentation is aimed at parents navigating a hereditary cancer, it will also be appropriate for previvors with children, as well as previvors and survivors diagnosed before becoming parents. There will be plenty of time for questions!
Bio: Dr. Sue Friedman was practicing small animal medicine in south Florida in 1996 when she was diagnosed "out of the blue" at age 33 with breast cancer. At the time, she was unaware of familial risk factors for hereditary cancer. Reading an article about hereditary breast cancer after completing her treatment, Sue realized that she had several indications for a mutation. She pursued genetic counseling and, in 1997, tested positive for a BRCA2 mutation.
Shocked that her health care team didn't alert her to the possibility of being at high risk, and disappointed at having to make critical treatment decisions while unaware of her mutation, Sue acted so others could benefit from her misfortune. She founded FORCE in 1999 to fill the information void for individuals and families with hereditary cancer and to help them advocate for themselves. After five years as the organization's executive director (while maintaining her own busy practice), Sue left veterinary medicine to direct FORCE full-time. Since then, the organization has become an unequaled source of research, advocacy, support, and information regarding risk management, prevention, and awareness.
In 2004, Sue relocated her husband Dan, son Beau, and FORCE headquarters to Tampa to work more closely with researchers to improve medical options, care, and outcomes for people affected by hereditary cancer. She is a 20-year breast cancer survivor. Sue is co-author of the book Confronting Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer, which was published by Johns Hopkins Press, February 2012.

Time: 1pm PST/2pm MTN/ 3pmCST/4pm EST
We are happy to be partnered with Cancer Support Community Los Angeles on this Webinar.

There are many tools parents can use to help their children, including using intentional language and children's books to introduce the concept of cancer, organizing a small intimate care team and predictable schedule for children, and finding creative ways to maintain physical contact and quality time with children even through cancer treatment. Join this webinar for more tools and resources that will leave you feeling empowered.
This webinar will be lead and facilitated by Bright Spot Network’s Director of Programs and Community Outreach Carissa Hodgson, LCSW, OSW-C.
Carissa Hodgson, LCSW, OSW-C is the Director of Programs and Community Outreach at Bright Spot Network, which provides a program of support to parents with cancer who have young children. When Niya embarked upon this journey, she chose to view it as her rebirth and shared that “she would rise healthier and stronger than ever after this spiritual transformation.” Niya has done just that as she focused inwardly to make changes to improve her life, learned to accept help, and shared her vulnerability and experience with others. Niya is passionate about connecting with and providing support for other parents diagnosed with cancer.

This presentation will address the emotional and physical impacts of parents who have young adults with cancer. We’ll explore common stressors and concerns including the burnout that arises while caregiving for young adults with cancer. We will identify coping strategies and interventions to help parents navigate through their adult child’s cancer journey, including issues surrounding being a grandparent if the young adult has children.
This presentation is aimed at adult parents of young adults who have cancer but all are welcome to attend. There will be time to ask questions, as well as connect with other parents/grandparents.

Parenting with Cancer Writing Workshop
Parenting with Cancer Writing Workshop
Date 2/25/23
Time 10am PST/12pmCT/1pmEST
This one-day writing workshop will take place remotely (via Zoom) and is designed specifically to explore feelings & stories through writing related to parenting young children while also managing your own cancer diagnosis. This workshop will be a soothing and healing reprieve from your day-to-day with writing prompts, poetry and discussion — all in the comfort of your home — specifically in a community that understands where you're coming from.
Facilitated by April Stearns of Wildfire Magazine (Santa Cruz) and author Mary Ladd (San Francisco), who both experienced breast cancer diagnoses and years of treatment while parenting their small children. The goal of the workshop is to give you space, time and inspiration to begin to write your unique cancer / parenting story. Whether you want to publish your story on a blog, in a newspaper, share it with friends and family, tuck it away for your child to read one day, or just use as a journaling exercise, this workshop is designed to help you experience the healing that comes from letting your story out. This workshop will focus on writing that heals, which is writing that accepts our story and makes sense of it, explores honest feelings, uses words to heal, embraces a positive outlook.

Legacy Workshop: Exploring Legacy Work in Community
2/15 @10:30am PST/11:30am MTN/ 12:30pm CST/1:30pm EST
A cancer diagnosis often prompts people to take stock of their lives, what they may leave behind, and how they can continue being part of their family's future, even if not physically present. One practical way to work through some of the emotions that emerge is through legacy projects: that heartwork that helps you and your loved ones remember special moments and make wishes for the future.
Join us for an event that begins to explore the concept of legacy work, offers tools and resources to begin your own projects, and provides a safe space with others to begin practicing some of this writing with prompts and templates.
This event will be moderated by Jen Ellsworth, Bright Spot Network parent. Jen earned her master's degree in social work at SUNY Albany and has since worked as a medical social worker in palliative care, hospice and oncology.
