During cancer treatment, both you and your children are likely to experience a wide range of intense emotions. It’s common for kids to feel confused, scared, or even angry about the changes they see in their parent(s) or in family dynamics. As a parent, you may also feel overwhelmed, fatigued, or frustrated by your own emotions and the challenges of treatment. This presentation will focus on how to respond to big emotions and behaviors in a way that is compassionate, patient, and effective.

Key topics we will cover include:

  • Recognizing Emotional Triggers: Understanding the emotional cues your children may exhibit and how cancer treatment can amplify feelings of fear, sadness, or insecurity.

  • Validating Feelings: Teaching your children that it’s okay to feel what they’re feeling, and that their emotions are normal, even if they seem intense or confusing.

  • Dealing with Behavioral Outbursts: Practical techniques for managing challenging behaviors, such as tantrums, defiance, or withdrawal, which can be common responses to stress and uncertainty. We'll talk about how to feel confident in setting and maintaining boundaries, even and especially when you're feeling exhausted or guilty.

  • Modeling Emotional Resilience: Demonstrating healthy ways to cope with difficult emotions, so your children can learn to process their own feelings constructively.

  • Encouraging Open Dialogue: Teaching children how to name and talk about their feelings, while also fostering a family environment where everyone’s emotions are respected and acknowledged.

This workshop is all about creating a safe emotional space where children can navigate their big feelings, and you can provide the guidance and stability they need, even during such a challenging time.
