Helping Children Cope with a Parent’s Chronic Cancer
When you are living with chronic cancer or a stage IV cancer diagnosis you may be overwhelmed with appointments, treatment, and the emotional load of advanced cancer. It can be even harder when you are also trying to help your children cope too. We see you and all the hard work you are doing.
Talk to your kids using clear, honest, and age-appropriate language.
Leave space for your kids to ask questions... and remember, it's o.k. to not know the answer!
Focus on the here and now. Try not to get caught up in future "what-ifs." ( As one Bright Spot parent told us, “Find out before you flip out.”)
Your kids (and you) are sure to run through ALL emotions. Remember, all emotions are good emotions.
Make a list of activities for when you want to connect but are parenting from the couch or the bed.
Remind your kids of special moments or memories that you cherish and don't forget to tell them you love them.
