Talking to Your Child’s School When a Parent has Cancer

If you are in the midst of a cancer diagnosis or treatment you may be considering talking to your child's school. It can feel scary (and just annoying!) to have to "break the news" to someone else but trust us, it's worth it.

School's want to help! They have resources, community connections, and are often a trusted adult that sees your child all day. Here are a few reasons to bring your child’s school into the conversation:

🧡 Your child may be having big behaviors. Having the context of what’s going on at home can help school staff understand and help with any changes in behavior at school.

🧡 Your child may be flying under the radar. Maybe they’re acting quieter or more closed off than usual. School staff may not notice or be able to help without some knowledge of what’s going on with your family.

🧡 Your child may be sharing news. There’s always a chance, especially with younger kids, that your child will share information with their teacher. If the school is told in advance, they can be prepared to have an age-appropriate discussion with your child and support them.
